Chelsea to grant Moises Caicedo transfer wish after failed summer move
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo could get his wish of being united with compatriot Joel Ordonez after all, with the Club Brugge defender having failed to secure a summer move.
The Ecuador international was a hot commodity in the bygone transfer window, with several clubs vying for his signature. Ordonez made no secret of his desire to move as he was keen on taking the next step in his career after impressing with Brugge.
Crystal Palace and Marseille were among his most active suitors, and Ordonez wanted to join the latter on the direct recommendation of Caicedo, who had spoken in glowing terms about his ex-Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi.
Ordonez was removed from the Brugge first team in a clear sign that he was on the verge of leaving, but no move ultimately materialised. Marseille and the Belgian club could not reach an agreement, with the Ligue 1 side signing Nayef Aguerd and Benjamin Pavard instead.
With the 21-year-old now likely stuck at Brugge until January, a new opening for Premier League clubs has emerged, and Chelsea are said to be right at the front of the queue.
Chelsea to sign Ordonez?
Earlier this year, it was claimed that Caicedo had requested that Chelsea sign Ordonez, and it seems that he could get his wish after all. According to TBR Football, Blues scouts watched the youngster in action as Ecuador upset Argentina earlier this week.
Representatives of Aston Villa were also in attendance as Ordonez kept a clean sheet against Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, et al. There is a clear expectation that Ordonez will have left Brugge by the time the 2026 World Cup rolls around.
It was recently revealed that Chelsea will look to add defensive reinforcements in January if their backline showcases any frailties in the coming months. They decided to keep faith in their current options in the summer, but they will be ruthless in the winter if need be.
Enzo Maresca demanded that a new centre-back be signed when Levi Colwill went down with an ACL injury in pre-season, but the club refused to go along with this request as they had to balance the books after breaching UEFA's spending rules.
