Why Givairo Read can finally solve Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold problem

During the summer transfer window, Givairo Read did not leave Feyenoord despite significant interest from abroad. With the full-back yet again proving his worth, interest remains amid claims that Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City are monitoring the defender.

Twice during the summer transfer window, Read saw a transfer go up in smoke. First, Nottingham Forest seemed close to signing him. Read himself wanted to leave, but the City Ground outfit were unwilling to meet the asking price.

Technical director Devy Rigaux wanted to make at least €30 million from Read's departure. Later, it seemed the 20-year-old was set to continue his career in Italy. AS Roma made several attempts to sign the right-back.

Here, too, the asking price ultimately proved to be the biggest stumbling block. Just like Nottingham Forest, AS Roma were unwilling to meet the requested €30m, so it was clear that Read would have to forget about his top transfer - at least this summer.

After the 2025/26 season was largely marked by injury woes for Read, the right-back now seems to be free from them. In the eight matches Feyenoord have played so far, Read has started every single one.

Read proves his value

Beyond just being available, he has already more than proven his worth on the pitch. Read has already provided an impressive four assists in the first matches of the new season.

It is therefore not surprising that there is already plenty of interest in the services of Read. The right-back is being monitored by several clubs in the Premier League.

According to TEAMtalk, this includes three powerhouses from the English top flight: Liverpool are reportedly following Read's progress but face competition from Arsenal and Manchester City.

However, Liverpool seem to have the greatest interest in his arrival and may want to strike as early as the winter transfer window. Read was previously linked to both City and Liverpool.

Rumours surrounding the Reds were already circulating in the summer of 2025, while those concerning the Cityzens date from a somewhat more recent past. City and Bayern Munich seemed for a long time to be planning to compete for Read.

However, neither club followed through, with Feyenoord's asking price playing a role in Bayern Munich's case, alongside the fact that the Germans prioritised strengthening other positions.

Liverpool the best choice for Read

Looking at the three Premier League clubs currently interested in Read, Liverpool appears to be the best next club for the full-back. With the Reds, he achieves a Club Fit score of 83 out of 100, as per the Career Advice tool of data analytics firm SciSports.

It is notable that Liverpool's playing style and formation suit Read well. The right-back even receives the maximum score of five stars on both assessment criteria. The Club Fits for Man City and Arsenal turn out significantly lower. Read has to settle for scores of 72 and 66, respectively.

The lower scores are due to a lack of regular playing time prospects at Man City and Arsenal. At the same time, Arsenal's playing style does not suit Read well, meaning a transfer to the reigning Premier League champions does not seem like a good choice.

However, it is clear that Read still needs to develop further if he is to become an important player for Liverpool. Currently, the Feyenoord right-back has a skill rating of 55, according to the FootballTransfers algorithm.

This places him below the ratings of the options Liverpool already have, including names like Jeremie Frimpong (skill of 75.2), Conor Bradley (skill of 68.7), and Ronald Araujo (skill of 71.2), who is on loan from FC Barcelona.

Nevertheless, Read definitely has the potential to take significant steps forward. The wing-back has a potential rating that is well above his current score. Our data shows that Read has a potential of 73.2, placing him not far off Frimpong's current skill, but this is liable to change the more minutes he plays at Feyenoord.

Indeed, there has already been a notable improvement in recent months, and there is no reason to suggest why this won't continue to be the case. With Frimpong having massively struggled at Liverpool, Read could eventually outgrow his compatriot.

According to data from FootballTransfers, Read currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €27.5m, with a maximum range of €34.4 million. If he continues to develop, it cannot be ruled out that the wing-back's ETV will rise further.

Feyenoord might then set a higher price, making a transfer for Read even more lucrative for the Rotterdam club. In practice, of course, it remains to be seen how everything will unfold.

What's already clear, though, is that he is an immense talent and seems to be destined for great things.
