Liverpool are not about to waste any time in signing their successor to Mohamed Salah, with head coach Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes targeting a deal for the January transfer window.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Salah is set to depart Liverpool next summer, despite signing a two-year extension with the Anfield club recently.

Now 33 years old, the Egypt international is coming off the back of arguably the best Premier League campaign in history while he has also contributed a goal and an assist to the Reds’ cause this time around.

There is an acceptance, however, that Liverpool will need to move on from the legendary attacker in near future and his Anfield heir has already been singled out.

Lyon winger Malick Fofana has been earmarked as the player who can take over from Salah in the long run, according to Fichajes.

Liverpool appear to be eager to push for the Belgium international in January, with the report indicating that the Merseyside giants want the deal done “now”.

Slot’s side will be aware that there is likely to be intense competition for the 20-year-old attacker. Chelsea and Arsenal were also rumoured to have an interest in him during the summer months.

Fofana turned down the possibility of moving to the Premier League, explaining: “I thought about the transfer, but I believe playing a lot now is more important, and that has to happen in Lyon.”

Is Fofana a Salah replacement?

While Fofana does have similarities to his game with Salah in that he is quick, technical and decisive, he has often played off the left for Lyon and is naturally right-footed – the opposite of the Egyptian on both counts.

There are still areas of his game to refine, but an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €38 million represents a relatively cheap price for Liverpool, who have grown used to spending big after a spectacular summer that saw them capture Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and more.
