Liverpool can already start planning for the transfer window next summer as Arne Slot’s side have been given a major contract update.

The Reds enjoyed spectacular success in the transfer market just closed. While they spent more money than any club in a single window previously, this was tempered by smart sales that limited their net spend.

Marca reports that the France international defender has rebuffed them and has instead decided to move to Real Madrid as a free agent when his deal expires at the end of June 2026.

Although Arsenal’s William Saliba is Los Blancos’ “major target”, the side from the Spanish capital appear to prefer a move for Konate due to his contract status. Saliba’s deal with the Gunners does not expire until 2027, meaning he would command a sizeable fee – something that Real Madrid would prefer to avoid paying.

Konate joked in an interview released last week on Telefoot that Kylian Mbappe is “calling him every two hours” to talk him into a move to Real Madrid.

Konate to follow Trent to the Bernabeu

Liverpool are already resigned to losing Konate, according to the Spanish media.

Marca claims: “Liverpool once again put forward an attempt, but the defender was rejected. At Anfield, they consider his departure a sure thing.”

It goes on to explain that Konate will have to decide how to manage his exit in the light of the manner in which Trent Alexander-Arnold was treated when he left Liverpool to sign for Real Madrid earlier this summer.

The right-back was slammed for his behaviour, having been seen to go behind the back of the club before signing for the Bernabeu side.

Meanwhile, the prospect of Konate pulling an ‘Alphonso Davies’ and performing a U-turn against his decision to join Real Madrid has been dismissed in Spain.

Liverpool already seem to have a replacement for Konate lined up in the form of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who came close to moving to Anfield this summer.
