Arsenal spent big during the summer transfer window and Mikel Arteta’s side are already making plans for January as they continue their quest to win the Premier League title.

The Gunners were the biggest net spenders in football during the summer as they splashed out over €235 million and recouped only €8m on the market.

Arteta’s side strengthened with eye-catching additions such as Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres while their outgoings were limited to a handful of squad fillers.

So far, the results have been relatively positive, with Premier League wins against Manchester United and Leeds tarnished by a narrow 1-0 loss against defending champions Liverpool at Anfield.

But Arsenal’s big spending may force them to look at ways of balancing the books in January, and according to Football Insider, that could mean offloading two experienced stars.

Arsenal earmark two big names for January sales

Arteta’s side are examining the possibility of selling Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard in the mid-season window, potentially raising around €50 million.

Jesus is currently out with a serious injury but the former Manchester City player still commands an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €32m while Belgium international winger Trossard is worth just short of €18m.

January could represent the last opportunity for Arsenal to sell Trossard, who is out of contract at the end of the season and could well leave as a free agent. The 30-year-old is set to tumble down the pecking order following the arrival of Eze and Noni Madueke as wing options this summer.

Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, is unlikely to be satisfied with his likely role as backup to Gyokeres, particularly with his chances of being involved at the World Cup next summer hinging on his ability to play regularly.

With Arsenal forced to juggle with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the prospect of selling players who will likely be backup options for good money must be a tempting one.
