Xavi Simons: ‘New development’ in transfer saga changes everything
Xavi Simons’ transfer saga, which has seen him so long linked with a move to Chelsea, has had a major “new development” that could change the face of the RB Leipzig star’s future.
Although Chelsea have had the fate of the Netherlands international in their grasp for weeks now, they have been unable to get the move over the line. Before Xavi can arrive at Stamford Bridge, players need to be sold, yet the Blues have been unable to offload the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Raheem Sterling.
With the move in limbo, Tottenham Hotspur are making moves to secure the 22-year-old offensive midfielder.
Bild reports that Thomas Frank’s side are doing their best to prise Simons away from their London rivals.
After weeks of stalling, the German source reports: “There’s finally a new development: Premier League side Tottenham have entered the race and asked about Xavi. Bild’s information is that RB Leipzig remain confident they will be able to get the talented youngster off their payroll.”
Xavi has been pushing for a move to the Premier League, with the belief in Germany that a move to Chelsea appears “highly unlikely”. The Blues making a move for Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez would appear to back that up.
Romano: Xavi Simons still going to Chelsea
Fabrizio Romano disagrees with the reports in Germany.
Taking to YouTube, he dismissed Tottenham’s interest in the player and reaffirmed that Chelsea remain in control of Xavi’s future.
“Chelsea keep working for Xavi Simons, I can guarantee that. They are in contact with people in charge of the deal,” he said on Tuesday night.
Instead, Romano expects Spurs to target the likes of West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta and Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth, leaving Simons free to complete his long-awaited move to Chelsea.
