Xavi Simons to Chelsea BOMB drops
Chelsea’s chase of RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons is set to come to an end in an unexpected fashion.
The Blues have been chasing the Netherlands international attacking midfielder for weeks but have been unable to get the deal over the line.
And now it appears that the transfer could break down entirely due to the stance that Chelsea have taken over the move.
Bild reports that Simons’ move to the Stamford Bridge side has been on the rocks for some time with only “loose communications” between the clubs lately.
Critically, Chelsea have told the 22-year-old former PSG and Barcelona youth that they will only complete a move for him if a player moves in the opposite direction.
Leipzig have been offered three players: Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku and Carney Chukwuemeka, who has since moved to Borussia Dortmund.
While Nkunku is a player that the Saxony club have at least considered, some bosses at the club are said to be against his return. Disasi, meanwhile, appears to hold no appeal for Leipzig, who are not ready to bow to Chelsea's terms.
Xavi deal causes Leipzig trouble
This poses a major problem to Leipzig, who were out of sorts as they were thumped 6-0 by Bayern Munich on the opening night of Bundesliga action on Friday.
A €70 million price tag has been slapped on the head of Xavi, but while he has reached an agreement over personal terms with Chelsea, there is no sign of an offer to the Red Bull-owned outfit.
Speaking on Friday after the loss to Bayern, sporting director Marcel Schafer said: “As of today, Xavi will stay with us. I have always said that we make decisions based on all sporting and economic aspects. We allow players to take the next step; we will not block any players. But only if all parameters are right, and that hasn't been the case so far.”
Xavi’s departure is required for signing to be made. With his switch to Chelsea stalling, it puts Leipzig’s move for Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott in doubt.
The Blues, then, are not the only Premier League club with a vested interest in developments in Leipzig.
