Victor Osimhen to Chelsea: Transfer verdict issued by club legend
Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes that his former club’s decision to end their pursuit of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen was the correct one.
The Nigeria international has been heavily linked with a Stamford Bridge switch for the past few years and FootballTransfers understands that a move was a possibility this summer before the Blues opted to sign Liam Delap.
Osimhen was also close to joining Chelsea last year, however they were unable to finalise a deal with Napoli and he eventually joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan deal.
A move to west London was on the cards ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, but Chelsea eventually decided to sign Delap and Brighton & Hove Albion star Joao Pedro instead, despite the fact that Osimhen scored 37 goals in 41 appearances on loan at Galatasaray last season.
Although the Nigerian is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, Hasselbaink believes Chelsea made the right decision by opting against signing Oaimhen this summer.
“I know he’s your countryman but I’m not convinced of Osimhen for the Premier League,” Hasselbaink told former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel during an appearance on ‘The Obi One Podcast.’
“‘For Spain, for Italy - yes. For the Premier League? I’m not 100% sure.
Hasselbaink added: “I really like Jackson. Why? Because he brings a lot of energy to the team and people don’t see that. The pressing from the front, the work-rate - all that kind of stuff is so important for a successful team.
“Then he gets lots of chances. He needs to get better at finishing, but I’d rather have a striker who gets lots of chances than a striker who doesn’t get chances.”
Who will Victor Osimhen join this summer?
Osimhen is currently one of the most sought-after players in world football, although his wage demands are a major obstacle for the vast majority of clubs in Europe.
The Nigeria superstar wants an annual salary of at least €12 million, as per reports, and a move to a top European team has not yet been finalised due to this reason.
Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal, however, do possess the financial ability to sign Osimhen and they have reportedly offered him a contract proposal worth a whopping €160m across a four-year deal.
Despite this, reports in Spain indicate that Osimhen has set his sights on completing a surprise move to Manchester United, with the Red Devils eager to add a world-class number nine to Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad.
