Amorim 'requests' Premier League star with Man Utd forced into €40m transfer decision
Manchester United have reportedly opened talks over a new goalkeeper to replace Andre Onana, with Ruben Amorim said to have ‘specifically requested’ their latest target.
United are looking to make wholesale improvements to their squad this summer, although their business has stalled after a failure to sell players like Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, while talks continue to drag on with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo.
But with United set to leave for a pre-season tour of the United States next Tuesday, Amorim is keen to ramp up the club’s transfer business, particularly after receiving around €15 million from sell-on clauses for Anthony Elanga, Alvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele.
The windfall has seemingly helped United continue their squad building by approaching Emi Martinez, with the goalkeeper set to leave Aston Villa this summer.
Argentine outlet TyC Sports claim that negotiations are already underway with Aston Villa as United aim to move quickly to beat out Galatasaray and teams from Saudi Arabia.
United have been forced to consider replacements for Onana after the Cameroonian suffered a hamstring injury that could see him be sidelined for the next two months.
Aston Villa make goalkeeper move with Martinez likely to leave
Martinez still has four years remaining on his contract at Villa Park but Unai Emery’s side are thought to be keen to cash in on the keeper for PSR reasons.
Villa had previously been hoping to receive as much as €40 million for Martinez but, with formal interest having been light in the 32-year-old, they could be forced to lower their demands.
The Premier League side signed Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot this week, although the 34-year-old is more likely to be a backup rather than being considered a replacement for Martinez.
United, meanwhile, had been expecting to stick with Onana despite his struggles with form last season but the 29-year-old’s injury has complicated matters and forced Amorim into action.
