Leeds ROCKED as star striker demands to leave
Leeds United's preparations for their Premier League return have hit a speedbump as star striker Mateo Joseph has demanded to leave this summer.
When it was confirmed that Joseph had not travelled with his team-mates for a pre-season camp in Germany, speculation was rampant as to why, and manager Daniel Farke has confirmed that the player wants to leave Elland Road.
Despite being a key player for Leeds in their promotion campaign from the Championship, the Spaniard is desperate to return to his homeland amid alleged interest from Real Betis.
"It was actually the plan for him to come to Germany and the situation is also quite clear," Farke told reporters at the training camp in Germany.
"First of all, we really value and rate him. Otherwise, we wouldn't have played him, especially in the beginning of the last successful campaign, ahead of Golden Boot winner Joel Piroe and ahead of an experienced striker like Patrick Bamford. If I'm not completely wrong, he had 39 appearances for us in the Championship, I think, double figures of appearances in the starting line-up.
Leeds are adamant that Joseph is not for sale, but Farke admits there's not much the club can do if the striker has his heart set on a departure.
“You just do this with a 20-year-old guy, or 21-year-old guy, when you believe in him and trust him. So it's a sign of how much we value him," the Leeds boss continued.
"Nevertheless, he came to me and to us and said that he wants a new challenge and would like to have a move. He has also hinted that he prefers a move to Spain due to his Spanish roots. And yes, obviously that was more or less his call. And therefore, okay, we just want players who are excited about the project to play with Leeds United in the best league in the world, here in the Premier League, who want to be here with us and want to be successful with us."
