Alexander Isak has named his price to sign a new Newcastle United contract – and it’s good news for Liverpool as they try to prise the Sweden international forward from St James’ Park.

Liverpool see Isak as their ‘dream’ target for the No.9 role at Anfield, despite Arne Slot’s side also having a clear interest in Hugo Ekitike.

Newcastle are adamant that they won’t sell the striker, but although Isak has three years left on his deal in the North East, he has told the Magpies that he wants an enormous pay rise during contract negotiations, TalkSport reports.

According to the radio station, Isak has told Newcastle bosses that he wants a deal worth close to €350,000 (£300,000) a week. It is claimed that such a salary would “smash” the Magpies’ pay structure.

Despite the 25-year-old being a star performer for Eddie Howe’s side, the Magpies have been unwilling to spend such sums on wages in the past. Indeed, no Newcastle player in history has come close to earning such a lavish wage.

Alexander Isak's future: Liverpool stay, Saudi switch or fresh Newcastle deal?

Speculation has built over Isak’s future in recent weeks to such an extent that he did not travel for his side’s 4-0 friendly loss to Celtic in Glasgow on Saturday.

Although Arsenal were interested in him earlier this year, Newcastle’s demands seem to have put the Gunners off entirely, leaving big-spending Liverpool as the only possible Premier League destination this summer. The Reds appear willing to shatter their transfer record for a second time this summer to land the forward.

More recently, there were reports that Newcastle had given Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal the ‘green light’ to open contract talks with Isak.

This offered the possibility of the former Real Sociedad player being paid by the Saudi side but potentially being sent back to Newcastle on loan. After all, both teams are owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). Such a scenario would only raise further controversy towards multi-club ownership models.

The Transfers Podcast also revealed that uncertainty over the former Real Sociedad star's future has forced Newcastle to position themselves to sign Randal Kolo Muani from PSG.

Isak’s contract demands, meanwhile, benefit Liverpool more than Newcastle and only increase the possibility of a blockbuster transfer this summer.
