Rangers told to pay €23m for star who 'dreams' of Ibrox transfer
Barry Ferguson believes that Rangers will need to pay roughly €23 million (£20m) to sign his nephew Lewis Ferguson next year.
Barry, 48, made over 400 appearances as a player for Rangers and his nephew Lewis has been widely tipped to leave Bologna in order to follow in his footsteps and secure an Ibrox switch.
The Scotland international has established himself as one of Serie A’s best central midfielders since arriving at Bologna in 2022 and although a proposed summer move to Rangers fell through, Barry believes that a deal could be finalised soon.
“That's one of his ambitions, at some stage he will play for Rangers,” Barry told Go Radio (via The Daily Record). “Who knows when that will be, I would reckon Bologna will want a chunky transfer fee for him because I think he's still got two years left on his contract.
“Maybe one day, but I would love to see it myself. When that is who knows? I would imagine what would have been the stumbling block, would be the transfer fee, but as your contract runs down you know what happens with transfer fees they go lower.
“You never know, at some stage it might be doable for Rangers if that transfer fee is a bit lower than what I think Bologna would want for him at this moment in time.”
When asked if Lewis would cost around £20m (€23m), Barry added: “Yeah, I would think they would be looking at that because of the length of his contract he's got left. Never say never, hopefully one day in the future we'll see another Ferguson playing for Rangers.”
Lewis Ferguson confirms Rangers transfer stance
Meanwhile, Lewis himself has also addressed a possible move to Rangers during the international break.
“I had a long think after the World Cup and a bit of time on holiday where I thought about my future,” Ferguson admitted to reporters (via Glasgow World).
“I was a little bit unsure but nothing was ever really that close [with Rangers] to be honest. When I went back to pre-season with Bologna, we had a new manager and it was like a fresh start again, although we have since changed [the manager] again.”
He continued: “I had a long think about my future and what that was going to look like and in the end it was still at Bologna. I've loved every moment that I have had there so it was just about continuing that journey and seeing where it takes me. I think one day [I will play for Rangers].
“It's no secret that I grew up a fan and my family is involved in the club. It was a dream and an aspiration of mine as a kid and that's not changed. But I don't want to speak about that while I am still a player at Bologna as I have got too much respect for them.
“But in the future you never know. It might happen or might not but it's always been something in my mind.”
Ferguson has two years remaining on his current contract at Bologna, and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €14m.
