Chelsea fan favourite to be sold after just ONE year
A Chelsea fan favourite could be on the move for the second time in 12 months after receiving interest from a Premier League side who are reportedly ‘seriously considering’ a transfer this summer.
Chelsea have seen a number of academy graduates leave Stamford Bridge in recent years in order to maximise their PSR allowance, with the likes of Lewis Hall and Mason Mount being sold in the last two years.
However, perhaps no player’s exit generated more controversy than Conor Gallagher, who joined Atletico Madrid last summer in a deal that allowed Joao Felix to move to Chelsea.
With Felix reportedly already in talks to leave Chelsea once again, Gallagher too could be on the move to a new club according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, who state that Newcastle and Tottenham are among the sides interested in the 25-year-old this summer.
Gallagher began the season as an integral part of Atletico’s midfield but the England star struggled to capture his best form after Diego Simeone opted to change system and move him to the left flank, leading to the La Liga giants being willing to ‘listen to offers’ for the ex-Chelsea man.
It is claimed that Newcastle could offer Gallagher an opportunity to increase his chances of making England’s World Cup squad next summer, with Atletico open to his departure if they can recoup the €42 million fee they paid for him last year.
Newcastle eye Gallagher as replacement for outgoing midfielder
Gallagher is understood to be happy in Madrid, while Atletico too have no complaints about the midfielder’s attitude or conduct, however they are aware of the ‘golden opportunity’ to cash in on a player who may find gametime limited next season due to the club’s new signings this summer.
Newcastle may be in the market for a new midfielder, with Leeds pushing to sign Sean Longstaff, and manager Eddie Howe has held a long-standing interest in Gallagher which could lead to them pursuing the Atletico man as a replacement.
No bid or formal approach has been made as of yet, with Newcastle still to confirm the €60m signing of Anthony Elanga as well as pursuing a €40m move for James Trafford.
Much will first depend on Longstaff’s future but, with Gallagher open to the move back to the Premier League, he could end up as Newcastle’s next big money target as the summer progresses.
