Chelsea could have finally found a home for Joao Felix, with reports in Portugal claiming that the unwanted forward is close to re-joining former club Benfica this summer.

Felix only signed for Chelsea last summer for €52 million but the 25-year-old made just three Premier League starts before being loaned out to Milan in January, where he failed to impress.

Chelsea are looking to move Felix on despite the Portuguese international having six years remaining on his contract and there was a fear that they may not have a taker for him, having fielded limited interest or financially unviable proposals.

But Portuguese outlet Maisfutebol state that Benfica have made ‘significant progress’ in negotiations for Felix and they are ‘confident’ of his return in the coming hours.

The process is said to have been ‘accelerated’ after a meeting today between Felix’s representatives including Jorge Mendes and Benfica chiefs such as president Rui Costa.

Crucially, Benfica will look to sign Felix permanently despite initially considering a loan move, although the fee is said to be ‘confidential’ at this moment in time.

Chelsea Felix mistake set to come to an end

Chelsea will be breathing a sigh of relief at getting rid of a member of their new ‘bomb squad’ of players who are not considered part of Enzo Maresca’s first team.

The likes of Ben Chilwell, Armando Broja and Raheem Sterling are all in search of a new club, while Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka and David Datro Fofana are just some of the players who will be left in transfer limbo this summer.

Chelsea were initially keen to sign Felix after a loan spell in the 2022/23 season which endeared the forward to the club, leading to his permanent signing last summer.

However, Felix only proved his worth in cup competitions against inferior or lower league opposition, with his Premier League performances leaving much to be desired and seeing him join Milan where he netted just twice in 15 Serie A games.
