Chelsea have finally signed the 'next Viktor Gyokeres' - now he has to show he was worth the wait

Chelsea have finally managed to get their hands on Conrad Harder after sister club Strasbourg signed him on loan from RB Leipzig.

The Denmark international departed the Bundesliga club under a bit of a cloud. Signed as a huge prospect for a sizeable €24 million last summer, Harder failed to impress in Saxony, scoring just four goals across 34 appearances.

The 21-year-old played fewer than 1,000 minutes of Bundesliga football as he was unable to dislodge fellow summer signing Romulo from his starting spot, and there were whispers of an attitude problem behind the scenes.

When Leipzig agreed a deal to sign Chelsea outcast Marc Guiu as well as AC Milan forward Christopher Nkunku in the latter stages of the window just gone, it was clear that one of their strikers would have to leave - and Harder was the obvious choice.

By selling Guiu to Leipzig, Chelsea inadvertently facilitated a transfer years in the making. Well, kind of. The Dane ended up joining Strasbourg on loan, and while this deal does not include a purchase option, it allows BlueCo to finally get a good look at a long-standing target.

From "next Gyokeres" to outcast

As TEAMtalk points out, Harder has been on the radar of Chelsea for years. The young striker was strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in early 2025, but nothing came of it.

Aged 19 at the time, Harder was in the midst of an impressive run of form at Sporting CP, who had signed him from Nordsjaelland the year prior because they knew it would be impossible to keep hold of Viktor Gyokeres.

Although the free-scoring Swede remained in Lisbon for another year, Harder managed to make a name for himself by netting prolifically despite his limited minutes as Gyokeres' understudy. He bagged five goals in fewer than 800 minutes of action in 2024/25.

It was a surprise that Sporting agreed to sell both Gyokeres and Harder in the summer of 2025, but they perhaps weren't fully convinced by the latter despite his encouraging performances.

Whatever the case, BlueCo, who have been following Harder since his Nordsjaelland days, have now brought him in-house to assess whether he can still fulfil his immense potential.

According to data analytics firm SciSports, Harder's ceiling remains very high. In fact, it is believed that he could reach a similar level to Joao Pedro if he develops properly.

It is now up to him to show that Chelsea and BlueCo were right to put their trust in him.
