Rangers have been urged to pursue a loan deal for Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman following Mikel Arteta’s admission that a temporary transfer may be accepted during the January window.

Dowman, 16, has attracted substantial transfer interest following his breakthrough into the Arsenal first-team and it’s understood that several clubs are likely to attempt a loan approach next year.

It remains to be seen if Arsenal will accept a departure, amid rumours that Noni Madueke may also be set to leave the club in 2027, but Arteta has hinted that his side will consider a loan deal if they deem it to be the best course of action for Dowman’s development.

“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” Arteta told reporters ahead of Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

“It depends on a lot of factors. What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes. We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.

“We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have Max in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there.”

Max Dowman to Rangers transfer verdict

When asked if he thinks Rangers should pursue a potential loan deal for Dowman next year, McCoist told talkSPORT: “I would take him, 100% I’d take him at Ibrox.

“I would [loan him out]. I wouldn’t have a problem with it if Mikel Arteta thought it was the best thing for his development. A conversation before about, I remember, Phil Foden. I thought it had been the right thing for him to go out.

“It wasn’t because Pep Guardiola kept him and then he went on to have a fantastic period after that. So, I can understand the pros and cons of both, but I would not have a problem. I would be okay for him to go and get some serious game time.”

Dowman has scored three goals in 15 first-team appearances for Arsenal, and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €7.5 million - the second highest of any 16-year-old in world football, behind Metz wonderkid Believe Munongo.
