Florian Wirtz’s transfer to Liverpool is “just a matter of time”, according to a reliable source who claims that the Anfield club could spend €150 million to secure the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker.

Liverpool have pushed themselves into pole position to sign Writz, 22, ahead of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, who have also been tracking the Germany international.

While personal terms with the player have been agreed, the Reds are locked in talks with the Bundesliga side over a transfer fee.

Sacha Tavolieri of Sky Sports says the discussions are not without problems, but everyone is pushing to get a record move completed.

“Talks are still underway about Florian Wirtz with Liverpool’s confidence increasing in order to make it happen around a €150M package,” he tweeted.

“Leverkusen not easy with instalments but each party is working on the same line. German midfielder’s expecting final green light to jump into a private jet & sign his five-year deal. Just a matter of time…”

Tavolieri's update echoes that of Fabrizio Romano, who said on Wednesday: “They’re working hard to get the Florian Wirtz deal done and it won’t take too long. That’s the message coming from those close to the deal.”

Wirtz set to smash transfer records

Should Liverpool pay €150m for Wirtz, it would set a new Premier League record transfer fee.

The current mark stands at the €121m that Chelsea paid Benfica to sign Enzo Fernandez in January 2023.

The Reds, meanwhile, would smash the club record. Liverpool’s most expensive transfer is the €85m that they paid Benfica for Darwin Nunez, of which €75m was paid upfront.

Of course, it appears unlikely that they will pay €150m immediately for Wirtz, with a significant proportion of that figure likely to be tied up in bonuses, some of which will be hard for the playmaker to achieve.

Nevertheless, after tying Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah down to new contracts, Liverpool’s move for Wirtz is a real statement of intent that they intend to bring fresh new blood to Arne Slot’s squad, despite their Premier League title success in 2024/25.

Expert opinion: Florian Wirtz to Liverpool

Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy says Wirtz is set to be a smash hit at Liverpool.

“Few players over €100m have actually been worth €100m,” he tells FootballTransfers.

“If you look at the list of the most expensive transfers of all time, most of them have not lived up to the hype. Florian Wirtz will. He is different.

“In a world where footballers are now mathematically trained on what to do at every moment, the truly technically brilliant individuals sparkle even more. It's why Lamine Yamal is being hyped as a Ballon d'Or winner as a teenager. And it's why Wirtz will be worth every penny Liverpool pay for him.

“The Reds have not had a player capable of Wirtz's kind of magic since peak Philippe Coutinho. Someone who could bamboozle defenders and outfox goalkeepers without breaking a sweat. And on top of that, he's a pressing machine. If anything, they might end up getting a bargain with him.”
