Real Madrid have reached an agreement in principle to sign Stuttgart star Angelo Stiller in a deal that will provide new head coach Xabi Alonso with a replacement for Toni Kroos in the Bernabeu side’s midfield.

The four-time capped Germany international has reached an agreement over a five-year contract, according to Nicolo Schira, who says that Real Madrid will now need to reach terms over a transfer fee with the Bundesliga side.

Stiller is expected to cost around €60 million in a deal that will see Los Blancos continue to make strong early progress in the transfer market.

The update comes as little surprise following a comment from Stiller’s Stuttgart team-mate Denis Undav, who dropped a strong hint that the 24-year-old would be Madrid-bound following the club’s German Cup success at the weekend.

He has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €46.7 million, so Los Blancos will need to pay over the odds if the German side stick by their demands.

Stiller is expected to be a direct replacement for Toni Kroos in the Real Madrid midfield, with his compatriot having retired from the game 12 months ago. He will also provide additional cover following the departure of Luka Modric.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Stiller, yet it appears the player is far closer to moving to the Bernabeu side.

Angelo Stiller to Real Madrid: The expert’s opinion

Bundesliga expert Ronan Murphy says: “Angelo Stiller is not known for scoring goals, particularly as his usual skills require him to break down opposition attacks rather than creating chances for his own team, but the defensive midfielder netted twice during Stuttgart's run to the German Cup. He was instrumental again in the final, providing assists for two of his team's goals in a 4-2 victory over Arminia Bielefeld.

“His defensive attributes should definitely mean he gets game time at Madrid. He offers something different to the current crop of midfielders, and would fit excellently in a Leverkusen-style system if Xabi Alonso tried to implement one with Real. Alonso often used two defensive-minded midfielders in the invincible season, so will be confident the same could work with Stiller.”
