€55m Liverpool signing on? 'Hungry' superstar breaks his silence
On-loan Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has addressed the speculation around Liverpool potentially picking up the €55 million purchase option in his deal.
The Uruguay international has been one of the biggest surprises of the Premier League season - after being one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer window. At the time, it was a shock when reports emerged that Liverpool were set to sign him from Barcelona.
Araujo had become a divisive figure in Catalunya and was eventually deemed surplus to requirements by Hansi Flick. The 27-year-old's reputation had suffered after repeated high-profile mistakes.
He arrived at Anfield as primarily a depth option. Araujo was supposed to cover for Giovanni Leoni at centre-back amid the Italian's recovery from an ACL injury and help out at right-back, where Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have struggled to consistently stay fit.
Few could have imagined that Araujo would become virtually a guaranteed starter soon after his arrival. With the exception of his first two matches, the versatile defender has started every game this season and primarily played at right-back.
Could Araujo stay?
The towering Uruguayan has been one of the biggest positive surprises thus far in this still-young campaign. He has been a reliable presence in Andoni Iraola's backline and looks to have been an excellent piece of business by former sporting director Richard Hughes.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Villarreal, Iraola was full of praise for Araujo, whom he described as a market opportunity. "Ronald was those kinds of situations that probably before the market was not there," he explained.
"We spoke to the player and the first conversation we had with him, it was quite encouraging. You see a hungry, experienced player, played at a top club, willing to show his level. I asked him straight away, maybe we will need you playing as a right-back.
"He was ready for everything. Whatever you need. He has proven he is ready to help the team, and the more he plays, the more he speaks the language and learns from his teammates, the more we will benefit from his experience. Everything has been quite positive with him."
Liverpool agreed a €55m purchase option with Barcelona as part of the loan deal for Araujo, and while that still looks like a hefty price for a player who will turn 28 later in the season, it is no longer the totally outlandish fee it seemed in the summer.
If the Reds decide that they want to keep Araujo, they would surely approach Barcelona beforehand to see if his price tag can be renegotiated to a slightly more reasonable fee. His current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €24.7m, down from a January 2025 peak of €58.2m.
However, for Araujo, all this talk about him potentially staying beyond this season is premature. He insists that he is happy on Merseyside, but he does not want to think about a summer transfer in mid-October.

"It’s very early to talk about these things," he said. "I’m just trying to enjoy every day, continue to grow and develop every day to have that confidence. I’m really happy to be here, my family are also very happy, but it’s a bit early to be talking about these things.
"Coming to Liverpool, it’s not easy. There are those demands, that responsibility. Personally, I’d already experienced that in Barcelona. It depends on the personality of each player and how they front that challenge.
"I knew it was a new challenge coming to the Premier League, but from the first moment I arrived, I had no doubts I had to give everything here. And that’s how I live it. It’s not easy to be on big teams, but that’s what we came to do. That’s the work we have to do."
