Celtic fan favourite breaks silence on Rangers transfer speculation
Former Celtic defender Greg Taylor has issued an official response following speculation that he could’ve joined Rangers this summer.
The 29-year-old left Celtic Park to join Greek side PAOK on a Bosman deal in July, but rumours suggested that a move to arch-rivals Rangers was on the cards before he opted to leave Scotland for the first time in his playing career.
However, Taylor has now unequivocally denied reports that a transfer to Ibrox could’ve taken place this summer.
“I can answer it… I was not close to Rangers! There’s no silence! I was not close, let’s get that in there,” Taylor told Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club.
“It’s nice that people miss you and respect what you did because there were definitely periods in my career at Celtic where people didn’t think I was up to it or wished for someone else. That’s the truth of the matter. So it’s nice to feel that way but equally it’s now a period that’s done.”
The Scotland defender added: “I can look back on some amazing times. I won so many trophies and won so many games and had so many amazing memories with my friends and family who enjoyed it with me.
“So it’s a club that I really love and I still watch on and hope they create more memories for themselves. Naturally, I played so many games at Celtic and loved it as well. You watch on with a bit of envy when they are winning and then obviously when it’s not going so well you think, it’s nice to be away.”
Taylor racked up 216 first-team appearances for Celtic following his arrival as Kieran Tierney’s replacement in 2019 and he helped the club win a total of 11 trophies across a hugely successful six-year stint with the Bhoys.
Rangers’ summer transfer business
Despite failing to agree a deal for Taylor, Rangers were still incredibly busy during the 2025 summer transfer window.
They completed nine permanent signings, spending a combined total of €29.7 million, while they also added a further five players on loan deals.
However, they endured a torrid start to the 2025-26 campaign and Russell Martin, who was appointed as the permanent replacement for Philippe Clement in June, was sacked after just 17 matches in charge at Ibrox.
Following failed talks with Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat, Rangers appointed former Sheffield Wednesday boss Dany Rohl as their new head coach on Monday, and he will take charge of his first game against Brann in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
