Barcelona have announced that Wojciech Szczesny has signed a two-year contract extension, effectively confirming that long-serving goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is facing the axe.

The Blaugrana have had an eventful summer so far, and it is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The Blaugrana have ruffled some feathers both with their public - and ultimately unsuccessful - courtship of Nico Williams and with their goalkeeper decisions.

Barcelona headed into the summer with long-serving No.1 Marc-Andre Ter Stegen fit again after a lengthy injury, Wojciech Szczesny coming off an encouraging first season and Inaki Pena as third choice.

However, despite looking well-stocked in the shot-stopper department, the Catalans signed Joan Garcia from city rivals Espanyol for €25 million, with the clear idea of the 24-year-old becoming the club's new first-choice option.

This raised eyebrows as Ter Stegen is still contracted until 2028, while there had been talks over an extension for Szczesny, leaving them with three goalkeepers who would all expect to see regular minutes next season.

Barcelona confirm Szczesny extension

Now, Barcelona have officially announced that Szczesny has penned a two-year extension with the club, which effectively confirms that the LaLiga champions will look to offload Ter Stegen.

However, this could prove difficult as the German reportedly has no intention of leaving the club. The 33-year-old is ready to fight for his place, but it is clear that he will be fighting a losing battle.

This will be a major headache for the Blaugrana, whose registration issues doomed their pursuit of Williams. They can ill-afford to register Ter Stegen if he won't be selected, but this would essentially mean paying a player who isn't eligible to feature.

Barcelona need to find a way to get him off the books, but with a new deal for Szczesny now confirmed, potential suitors will know that the Catalans are in a vulnerable negotiating position.
