Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham "advised" Mason Greenwood to join Getafe on loan from Manchester United this summer, according to Jose Bordalas.

Greenwood signed for the Spanish club in August after Man Utd decided that he would not play for the club again.

Getafe were quick to approach the Red Devils and secured a season-long loan deal for Greenwood on transfer deadline day.

The forward has not played for Man Utd since his arrest in January 2022. Later that year, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

He denied all allegations and after key witnesses withdrew from the investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against the forward in February 2023.

Greenwood’s return to football was expected this summer and as a result, the Englishman was linked with moves to Saudi Arabia and Turkey, but Getafe won the race for his signature, in no small part thanks to Bellingham.

What has been said?

Getafe boss Bordalas has revealed that Real Madrid new boy Bellingham played a key role in Greenwood’s loan move to Getafe. He told Radio Marca: “Greenwood is friends with Bellingham, and he advised him to come to the Spanish league.

“It was a surprise, we never thought we could get a player like that. But they got in touch with our sporting director (Ruben Reyes), we talked, we didn’t think it could happen but both sides made an effort [financially].

“He is a fantastic player. You have to be patient, calm, he hasn’t played in a year and a half. We and his colleagues are helping him. He is integrating in a sensational way and I hope he can help us.”

Bellingham, 19, also moved to Spain this summer, with Real Madrid spending €103 million to poach him from Borussia Dortmund. The England international has enjoyed a brilliant start to life in La Liga, netting five goals and providing one assist in his first four Los Blancos matches.

Greenwood could make his Getafe debut against Osasuna this weekend.
