CR7 has been all over the news during this international break after he left the Portugal squad after being an unused substitute in Portugal's 2-1 Nations League victory against Norway on 27 September.

After he threatened to one day "tell the truth" about his departure, it was speculated that his illustrious international career may be over.

Portugal boss Jorge Jesus did open the door for Ronaldo's return, saying on Sunday:

"If he wants to, he'll return to the national team.

"We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who's going to decide.

"In my first call-up, I said, 'I need you, I need you to be close to me, playing or not playing, I need you.' And now I'm saying the same thing."

However, prior to that, he found himself the target of criticism from Ronaldo's wife.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Georgina posted a picture of Sir Alex Ferguson alongside Jesus and used a fake Fergie quote which read: "If Jorge Jesus knew in his heart that he had no intention of using it [Ronaldo], why did he call him? To make a point? That's not authority, it's insecurity."

She posted in text above the quote: "I don't know how this man can bear the name of Christ."

The post was subsequently deleted.

Ronaldo and Ferguson enjoyed a hugely successful time together at Manchester United and the player has continually referred to his former manager as a father figure in his life.

He started the first game in the international break, at home to Wales, but was dropped from the starting XI for the next fixture versus Norway and that catalysed a falling out between him and Jesus.

The Portugal boss played down the drama but Ronaldo added fuel to the fire by posting on Instagram:

"After the press conference of the national team, and following a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have made the decision to leave the national team training camp.

"In due course, I will tell all the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I always dedicated myself.

"Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates good luck, without exception."

Portugal won two matches in a row after Ronaldo's departure.
