Chelsea are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, but their pursuit of the England star could have a direct impact on Josh Acheampong’s future at the club.

Quansah, 23, has excelled since leaving Liverpool to join Leverkusen last summer and he was a surprise inclusion in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The former Liverpool defender is equally capable at centre-back and right-back, and German publication BILD report that Chelsea and Real Madrid are both interested in signing Quansah, who could return to Anfield if Andoni Iraola’s side trigger their €70 million buy-back clause.

Arsenal were also heavily linked with Quansah over the summer, before deciding to purchase his England team-mate Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, and it seems highly likely that he will leave Leverkusen in 2027 if the Bundesliga outfit receive a suitable offer.

Quansah is certainly a talented defender, but Chelsea would be making a major error if they lodge a formal bid for his services next year and they could lose a generational talent if they finalise a deal.

Analysis: Why Chelsea shouldn’t sign Jarell Quansah

Quansah is an extremely underrated player amongst Premier League fans, and interest from the biggest clubs in Europe should come as no surprise given his form for Bayer Leverkusen.

However, he isn’t the right signing for Chelsea.

On paper, the England international has the perfect profile to play as a right-sided central defender in Xabi Alonso’s favoured 3-4-2-1 system, and that is certainly true. But, Chelsea already have a talented young English defender for that role and they need to prioritise his development.

While Quansah is already a full England international, he doesn’t have the same potential as Josh Acheampong, who is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe.

The 20-year-old has already racked up 50 senior appearances for Chelsea and he has started four of their six matches across all competitions so far this season after being persuaded to stay at the club by new manager Xabi Alonso over the summer.

Acheampong is being watched by every elite club in Europe football following several years of transfer speculation and while he currently looks settled at Stamford Bridge, with a status as one of the club's 'untouchable' players, that could soon change if the Blues sign Quansah.

Acheampong is one of the best prospects to emerge from Chelsea’s famed academy in years and they must avoid stunting his development at all costs.

Of course, Quansah is a fantastic talent, but Arsenal reportedly saw a €65 million approach turned down this summer, and paying a fee of that magnitude to sign a player who would block Acheampong’s pathway to consistent game time is something Chelsea shouldn’t even consider.
