Widespread reports understand the Red Devils have made strengthening their midfield a priority ahead of the 2026-27 Premier League season.

However, two of their targets - Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali - have opted to join Tottenham Hotspur in a €216million (£185m) double deal.

United were also keen on Elliot Anderson before he completed his €134million (£116m) move to fierce rivals Manchester City this week.

BBC Sport understands United are taking a cautious approach to the summer transfer market, ensuring they get value for their money.

The Athletic also claims the 20-time league champions are keen to spread their budget across other areas of the pitch, with a new left winger planned.

And now according to the Mail, Man Utd have enquired into the cost of a potential deal to sign Netherlands star Summerville from West Ham.

Summerville catches the eye at the World Cup

Summerville caught the eye for the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup, scoring two goals and recording as many assists in four games.

The 24-year-old was also one of West Ham’s best players in an otherwise torrid 2025-26 season which led to relegation from the Premier League.

Summerville scored six goals in seven games in all competitions between January and February, before suffering a hamstring injury in the Hammers’ penalty shootout victory over Brentford in the FA Cup in March.

He was unable to rediscover that form after returning to the starting XI a month later, which had a huge bearing on West Ham failing to beat the drop.

However, the Mail understands Man Utd face competition to sign Summerville, with other European clubs having made enquiries of their own.

The news comes after The Athletic reported in June that Man Utd are admirers of Summerville, with the same outlet claiming he is valued at €58m (£50m).

Ederson yet to complete a medical for Man Utd

United are on the verge of making their first summer signing after agreeing a €40.5m (£35m) fee with Atalanta to sign Ederson in June.

BBC Sport understands the midfielder is yet to complete a medical, however, after he received a late call-up for Brazil’s World Cup squad.

After featuring in Brazil’s 3-0 group-stage win over Haiti on 20 June, Ederson told reporters his move to United is “practically almost all sorted.”
