Chelsea in talks over surprise summer transfer
Chelsea have reportedly made contact with Rayo Vallecano over a shock summer deal for Pep Chavarria following the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
It’s understood the Blues sanctioned Cucurella’s departure due to the presence of Jorrel Hato as an able replacement, however they are now keen to sign a new back-up left-back ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Marco Palestra is set to arrive as cover for both full-back positions, but landing a specialist left-back could still be on the agenda, despite the fact Chelsea are currently prioritising a deal for Crystal Palace central defender Maxence Lacroix, who has been tipped to secure a €55 million switch after the World Cup.
A move for former star Lewis Hall has been mooted, amid reports that he could be open to leaving Newcastle United this summer, although Manchester United are also heavily interested and it remains to be seen if he would entertain the idea of returning to Stamford Bridge.
As a result, Chelsea have begun scouring the market for possible alternatives and they have now earmarked Chavarria as a surprise option for the role, as per Spanish outlet Marca.
It’s reported that “initial contact” has been made over a potential summer deal, with Chelsea aware they may be required to act quickly as the 28-year-old has already received offers from a number of possible suitors.
Chavarria, who has played 125 games for Rayo Vallecano since his arrival in 2022, has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €11.1m and Chelsea are reportedly considering submitting an official bid for his services after an impressive 2025-26 season.
Analysis: Who will Chelsea sign this summer?
As mentioned, Chelsea are close to formally announcing the signing of Atalanta star Palestra, while a deal for Lacroix is also in the works as they look to oversee a major centre-back reshuffle before next season begins.
In addition, it has been reported that Chelsea want to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, with new boss Alonso understood to be pushing to complete a transfer.
Xhaka has already agreed personal terms with the Stamford Bridge outfit and is pushing to secure a reunion with his former Bayer Leverkusen manager, although a fee has not yet been finalised and Sunderland currently have no intention of selling the Switzerland international as they prepare for Europa League football next year.
Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers remains a top attacking target, but Arsenal are the frontrunners for his signature as things stand.
Chelsea had pre-agreed deals for Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Dastan Satpaev and Denner before the summer window opened, while it’s believed that Valentino Barco will arrive from sister club Strasbourg after confirming his departure from the Ligue 1 club.
