Chelsea are preparing to offer a forgotten England star a route back into Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans during the January transfer window.

The Stamford Bridge side are getting ready to make a sizeable offer for Ivan Toney, according to a report from in-the-know X account IndyKaila.

Former Brentford striker Toney has been with Al-Ahli of the Saudi Pro League for little over a year, having previously been linked with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United.

It is claimed that Chelsea are ready to offer the 29-year-old a six-month loan contract in which there will be an option to buy. The Blues are prepared to cover 70% of the striker’s wages in that period.

In return, Toney would get the type of exposure that he needs if he is to work his way back into Tuchel’s plans, having won the last of his seven international caps in the final of Euro 2024.

The striker has been in decent form with Al-Ahli since moving to Saudi, scoring 38 goals and providing seven assists across 54 all-time appearances.

Could Toney really move to Chelsea?

It would be a huge surprise if Toney were to move to Chelsea for several reasons:

  • His current salary would shatter the club’s wage structure.
  • Chelsea look well covered in the centre-forward area given Liam Delap is expected back from injury soon.
  • He is a completely different age profile to the Blues’ usual signings.

There’s little about this rumour that adds up to Chelsea making a serious move for the England hitman, although they were interested in him prior to his move to the Pro League.

Sky Sports reported little over a year ago that the Blues were hopeful the draw of Champions League football would be sufficient to allow them to sign Toney for a relative bargain of €42m (£36.5m) but that did not prove to be the case.

Chelsea have since totally refreshed their attacking options, signing Joao Pedro and Delap, while they have already snapped up Netherlands Under-21 centre-forward Emanuel Emegha from Strasbourg for the 20225/26 season.
