They have had two big money bids rejected by Brentford for the Cameroon international.

But with Mbeumo agreeing personal terms and making it clear that he wanted to join, United believed it was only a matter of time until a transfer was completed.

Mbeumo to Man Utd or Tottenham?

However, Tottenham’s appointment of Thomas Frank this week has seen Spurs hijack the race for his former Brentford attacker.

It is reported that Tottenham - at €82 million - have placed a bid higher than United’s, and the Red Devils are now worried they will lose the player.

As a result, ESPN report that United have begun working on two backup options.

The first is Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who famously scored the winner in the FA Cup final last month against Man City.

And the second backup option is Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

Both players would cost in excess of €70 million.

The report adds that United feel that these two players may actually suit Ruben Amorim’s system better than Mbeumo as they can excel in inside areas behind the striker.

Nevertheless, losing Mbeumo to Tottenham would be a blow given his brilliant season last term.

The expert's opinion on Bryan Mbeumo to Man Utd

Premier League expert Cameron Smith says: “Mbeumo enjoyed the best season of his career in 2024-25, notching 20 goals and seven assists in 38 Premier League games.

“His tally of 9.3 expected assists was the highest of any player in the entire English top flight and, alongside Matheus Cunha, he will provide Man Utd with the attacking dynamism they have sorely missed in recent years.

“Furthermore, Mbeumo’s relationship with Amad Diallo - who is likely to be deployed as a right wing-back next term - could blossom into one of the best in Europe.”
