Chelsea have enquired about Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, according to a report.

After months of the Blues insisting that they are happy with their options between the sticks, Chelsea appear to have changed their tune. On Tuesday, it emerged that the West London club have opened talks with AC Milan shot-stopper Mike Maignan.

The Stamford Bridge outfit reportedly view Maignan as a 'market opportunity' due to his stalled contract talks with the Rossoneri, and they are willing to finally pounce after years of interest.

However, it seems that the interest in Maignan may not be entirely down to his potential availability. On the contrary, it appears that Chelsea are actively scouring the goalkeeper market for an upgrade on their current options.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea have also enquired about Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, who is coming off a record-breaking promotion campaign.

Chelsea want Trafford

Trafford kept 29 clean sheets and only conceded 16 goals in 45 appearances as Burnley returned to the Premier League. This has naturally attracted the interest of suitors, and the report acknowledges that, despite Chelsea's enquiry, Newcastle hold the strongest interest.

The Blues' approach for Trafford is intriguing in the sense that it once again goes to show how keen the Blues are to utilise their knowledge of Man City's academy, where the shot-stopper was educated.

Chelsea director Joe Shields was previously a chief scout for Man City's academy, and Enzo Maresca occupied several coaching positions at the Etihad before moving to Stamford Bridge via Leicester.

Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, Tosin Adarabioyo and Jadon Sancho all previously featured in Man City's youth setup, while the Blues are also in talks to sign former Cityzens prospects Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens.

As things stand, though, a move for Maignan looks more realistic than one for Trafford.
