Chelsea approach AC Milan over Mike Maignan deal - Romano

Chelsea have approached AC Milan over a possible move for Mike Maignan, according to a bombshell report from Fabrizio Romano.
The France international has been heavily linked with a San Siro exit in recent months and Enzo Maresca’s side are now pursuing a summer deal following Robert Sanchez’s woes last season.
The 27-year-old was responsible for the most errors leading directly to a goal in the entire Premier League last term and the club are scouting for potential replacement options, despite a strong end to the campaign.
Widespread reports had suggested that Chelsea would not purchase a new goalkeeper this summer, with the club initially set to assess their current options of Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders (who will arrive from KRC Genk) and Sanchez.
However, Romano has now revealed that Chelsea are eager to land Maignan, having tracked the 29-year-old since his time at Lille.
The transfer expert posted on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea approach AC Milan to sign Mike Maignan as new goalkeeper.
“Mike Maignan has still not signed [a] new contract at the club and Chelsea are now aware of the situation. He’s always been high on Chelsea’s list with clubs in talks, decision up to Milan.”
Maignan, who made 53 appearances across all competitions last season, has just one year remaining on his current contract at Milan, and a summer departure is therefore on the cards.
The Frenchman boasts an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €19.1 million and he is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.

Chelsea to sign a new goalkeeper?
In addition to Maignan, Chelsea have also been linked with the likes of Lucas Chevalier (Lille), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund) and James Trafford (Burnley) in recent months.
The signing of Jorgensen from Villarreal last summer hasn’t worked out as planned and the club are now eager to bring Maignan to Stamford Bridge as they prepare for their first Champions League campaign since 2022-23.
The expert's opinion on Mike Maignan to Chelsea
Serie A expert Carlo Garganese says: "On reputation, Mike Maignan is probably the best goalkeeper in Serie A.
"Despite having Gianluigi Donnarumma's massive gloves to fill, Maignan was a revelation in his first season after joining from Lille in 2021 as he helped Milan win a surprise Scudetto under Stefano Pioli.
"He was named Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year in that first season as he established himself as the best in the league.
"Since then, Maignan has not managed to maintain the same brilliant consistency he showed in 2021-22 - and he has also faced a number of layoffs through injury.
"He endured a difficult season last year as Milan finished eighth and failed to qualify for Europe. He notably made a high-profile mistake in the first knockout round of the Champions League, which played a big role in Milan being knocked out by Feyenoord."
