Newcastle United are interested in signing a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Bernd Leno on manager Eddie Howe's shortlist.

The Magpies enjoyed a takeover in January, spelling the end to Mike Ashley's reign, which means they are now in a position to spend more freely.

The Saudi Arabian owners want to transform the club from relegation candidates into Champions League winners, and as part of this process they will need an almost entirely new squad.

Howe has identified the goalkeeper position as area that needs strengthening, with two Premier League proven players on his agenda.

However, it appears that the Englishmen's preferred choice is unavailable, and so he will opt for Chelsea's 'number two'.

Kepa or Leno to Newcastle?

Eddie Howe wants to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta, according to the Daily Star.

The Gunners signed Aaron Ramsdale last summer, in addition to Matt Turner in January, paving the way for the German's exit.

Leno signed for the club in 2018, impressing for large parts, but his time in north London is up. Offers between five and £10 million would be considered.

Newcastle would like to bring him to St. James' Park, but he would rather return to his homeland.

Instead, Howe may have to settle for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa, who has really struggled during his time at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard signed for a then-club record fee of €80m from Athletic Bilbao, only to be replaced by Edouard Mendy two seasons later.

However, he has played well when called upon by Thomas Tuchel this season and a fresh start could be exactly what he needs.

The Spaniard has plenty of talent but is lacking in confidence due to the many mistakes he has been scrutinised for.

Kepa's wages would be an issue for every club in the world, besides Newcastle, so he should welcome a move to the Northeast.
