Fabrizio Romano drops Lionel Messi transfer bombshell
Lionel Messi is close to signing a new contract at Inter Miami to end speculation of a blockbuster transfer in 2026.
The Argentina legend is into the final two months of his current deal with the MLS side and he has been linked with a return to Europe or a bombshell move to a club in Saudi Arabia over the past year.
However, Messi is now expected to snub a transfer away in favour of signing a lucrative new deal with Inter Miami.
The 29-year-old has been locked in contract extension talks for months and a conclusion is close to being finalised, according to football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.
He posted on X: “ Leo Messi closes regular season with Inter Miami at 48 G/A and talks over new contract remain at very advanced stages.
“Messi, expected to stay and sign new deal at the club with final details being sorted as he’s fully focused on Inter Miami project.”
Lionel Messi in 2025
Messi capped off a sublime 2025 season with a hat-trick during a 5-2 victory over Nashville on Saturday to seal the MLS Golden Boot.
The Argentina international netted 29 goals in 28 MLS games, in addition to providing 19 assists, and he is expected to win the MVP award after a stunning campaign from the Barcelona icon.
Following Messi’s match-winning performance against Nashville, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters: “Well, what can I say about Leo? The truth is, well, today he was exceptional, as he usually is.
“Clearly, I think if anyone had any doubts about what his regular season was like, the reality is that he's cleared any doubts. They'll surely give him the MVP award for everything he's shown.
“Talking about the three goals he scored, well, happy for him because he helped us win the game again.”
