Lionel Messi’s future at Inter Miami has been revealed in an official statement from MLS after his side were dumped out of the FIFA Club World Cup by PSG.

Messi’s former side proved far too good for David Beckham’s franchise, who trailed 4-0 at half-time to the European champions before the Parisians eased off in the season period.

The Barcelona legend was Inter Miami’s outstanding player and came closest to giving them a consolation goal with a late header that was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Now 38, Messi has been an outstanding figure for the Herons since joining them midway through 2023, establishing himself as the all-time leading scorer of the franchise. Included in his tally was a spectacular free kick against Porto at the Club World Cup, showing he still has the quality to cut it at the elite level.

But there is some doubt over what will happen next with the World Cup winner. Out of contract at the end of the year, the Argentine’s future remains open.

What next for Lionel Messi?

MLS communications director Mahonri Mendoza has addressed the situation.

Speaking to Saudi outlet Al-Riyadiyah, he said: “Messi’s contract extends until the end of this year, specifically until the end of the MLS season. He will continue as usual, and then his future will be decided - whether he stays for another year will be determined by Inter Miami’s management in agreement with the player.

“There were statements from Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, in which he expressed optimism about Messi staying with the team next year. He’s expected to be present at the opening of Miami Freedom Park, the club’s new stadium, in March 2026.”

Messi’s long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo decided to extend his contract with Al-Nassr in recent weeks, but this is unlikely to have a bearing on the thinking of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as their careers have gone in two very distinct directions.

There have long been rumours that Messi will one day return Newell’s Old Boys, the club he came through the ranks of before a move to Barcelona set him up for legendary status.
