Official: Chelsea announce Valentin Barco as ninth summer signing

Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco for an undisclosed fee.

The Argentina international has signed a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, valid until 2033, and he will officially link up with Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad later in pre-season.

Barco joined Strasbourg following a disappointing stint at Brighton & Hove Albion and having arrived as a left-back, he was converted into a central midfielder by former manager Liam Rosenior, who endured a torrid spell as Chelsea boss last season.

The 22-year-old is expected to be utilised in the middle of the park by Alonso next term, although rumours have suggested that he could immediately be sent out on loan amid Chelsea’s pursuit of Bournemouth star Alex Scott.

The Blues have also finalised a deal for Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, who is set to formally arrive at the club shortly, while Enzo Fernandez appears likely to remain at Stamford Bridge this summer, with Real Madrid currently prioritising a deal for Manchester City superstar Rodri.

Chelsea currently have Moises Caicedo, Reece James, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo and Fernandez as senior central midfielders at Alonso’s disposal, while academy starlets Reggie Watson and Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli have both impressed during the early weeks of pre-season.

Official: Valentin Barco joins Chelsea

Barco registered 12 goal contributions in 43 games across all competitions for Strasbourg last season and he was rewarded with an inclusion in Argentina’s squad for this summer’s squad. However, he only made one appearance at the tournament as Lionel Scaloni’s side fell to Spain in the final.

The 22-year-old has become Chelsea’s ninth signing of the summer window, following Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner, Danny Welbeck and Dastan Satpaev, and his exact transfer fee hasn't been disclosed.

Meanwhile, the club have sold Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella, Tyrique George and Jimmy-Jay Morgan on permanent deals, with Alejandro Garnacho offloaded to Aston Villa on a loan deal with an option-to-buy clause included.
