Arsenal cash in on Mikel Arteta favourite to fund new spending spree
Arsenal are "increasingly likely" to sell Gabriel Martinelli this summer, according to a report.
The Brazil international has been a crucial part of the Gunners' rise in recent years. Plucked from his home country as a raw teenager, Martinelli perhaps typifies the Arsenal evolution under Mikel Arteta better than anyone.
Still only 24, Martinelli has been turned into a disciplined Premier League-proven winger by Arteta. While other players have fallen by the wayside, the attacker has managed to evolve.
However, a point may now have been reached where even Martinelli can't keep up anymore. Though he has still been a solid contributor for the Premier League leaders, there is a growing consensus that Arsenal can do better.
Martinelli lacks the X-factor of a truly elite attacker, and it is no surprise that the Gunners are expected to pursue the signing of a marquee left-winger this summer.
Arsenal to cash in on Martinelli
Yan Diomande and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are two names currently under consideration, though both are expected to cost around €100 million. This means that Arsenal will presumably have to cash in on one of their valuable assets.
The obvious choice would be Martinelli. In fact, according to TEAMtalk, it is looking "increasingly likely" that the Brazilian will be on the move this summer.
Arsenal will not actively force Martinelli out, but if the right offer is presented, they will look to sell. His current contract runs until 2027, but with the option for a further season. Waiting another year would diminish his value or force the club into handing him an extension.
There is no shortage of interest in his services. Atletico Madrid have been linked with a move recently, and they are indeed keen on him. Additionally, Martinelli is said to be courted by Borussia Dortmund, Marseille and RB Leipzig.
Al-Nassr also have a strong and long-standing interest in the winger, but the winger previously rebuffed the Saudi club's advances as he wanted to remain in Europe. It is understood that, if he is to leave this summer, he wants to join a Champions League outfit.
Nothing is set in stone just yet, but Martinelli's future is set to be one of the biggest talking points at Arsenal this summer.
