Chelsea Transfer News Today: Wharton becomes top target as Fernandez set for Real Madrid
All the latest Chelsea transfer news in one place, including updates on Adam Wharton, Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella.
Chelsea make Wharton target No.1
Chelsea have identified Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton as their first-choice midfield target for the summer, according to Simon Phillips.
The Blues were interested in the England international before he joined the Eagles in early 2024, and they have continued to track his development ever since. Club chiefs believe his profile is ideal for the squad.
The interest in Wharton comes amid growing uncertainty over the future of Enzo Fernandez. The 22-year-old is the top choice to replace the Argentine, but there is an acknowledgement that he will neither come cheap nor will Chelsea have a free run at him.
Fernandez "much closer" to Real Madrid
Fernandez is openly flirting with a move to Real Madrid. On Monday, he said that he would love to move to the Spanish capital.
MARCA now reports that the 25-year-old is significantly more likely to move to Real Madrid than Man City star Rodri, who has also been heavily linked with a move to the LaLiga giants.
Fernandez is said to be "much closer" to Los Blancos than Rodri, with club president Florentino Perez no longer interested in the Spain international as things stand.
Romano: Fernandez not in contract talks
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has also provided an update on the situation of Fernandez, revealing that contract talks between the 2022 World Cup winner and Chelsea have come to a standstill.
"At present, there is no agreement on a new contract with Chelsea, and no formal negotiations have progressed," Romano said. "This creates a level of uncertainty, especially as he has not ruled out considering his options in the upcoming summer transfer window."
It was believed that Fernandez would be rewarded with an improved contract for his performances, but with the player now looking to leave Chelsea, this no longer seems to be an option.
Cucurella: It would be hard to turn down Barca
Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella has similarly raised eyebrows with an explosive interview with The Athletic.
In it, the former La Masia graduate admitted that he would find it difficult to turn down a return to Barcelona, who sold him to Getafe before giving him a proper chance in the first team.
Cucurella also took aim at Chelsea's hierarchy as he believes the current transfer model is hamstringing the team. "I understand this is part of the club’s policy, and that they want to take this direction - signing young players and looking to the future," he explained.
"But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this [the Champions League loss to PSG] make you feel discouraged."
