Fernandez 'much closer' to Real Madrid transfer after Chelsea exit hint
Enzo Fernandez has taken another giant step towards a summer move to Real Madrid after an intriguing twist which has seen the Chelsea star emerge as the top target for the Spanish giants.
Doubts have risen over Fernandez’s future at Chelsea in recent weeks after the 25-year-old refused to commit his future to the club beyond this season before admitting in a recent interview that he would like to live in Madrid one day.
The revelation has only further fuelled the speculation linking Fernandez to Real, with the La Liga side keen to sign an elite midfielder this summer and being long-time admirers of the Argentine star.
It had been believed that Real would push to sign Rodri instead this summer, particularly with the Manchester City star also speaking of his willingness to join the club last week. However, according to MARCA, Rodri has ‘no chance’ of moving to Real this summer and Fernandez is deemed as the ‘closer’ signing.
"Enzo is much closer to Real Madrid, Rodri has no chance of going to Real Madrid,” reporter Raul Varela said. “Today, the president of Real Madrid doesn't want to sign him.
“I hate transfer news because everything changes every fifteen minutes, but today the president of Real Madrid is not going to sign Rodri Hernández."
’It’s clear’: Fernandez angling for Real Madrid move with Chelsea comments
Fernandez still has six years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge but the midfielder may still look to force an exit this summer if Chelsea fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with the club currently sitting sixth in the Premier League.
Chelsea are adamant they will not look to sell Fernandez this summer and they would demand more than the €121 million they spent on him in 2023 if their stance was to change.
Real have not suggested that they would be willing to pay the asking price for Fernandez and may be hoping that he will push for a move in order to drive the price down, with another reporter suggesting that the player’s comments are all part of a transfer plan.
"It's clear that Enzo is making those statements because he's not comfortable in London and he wants things to happen with Real Madrid. I imagine his comments have rubbed Chelsea the wrong way,” reporter Irene Junquera told MARCA.
However, it was also mooted that Fernandez may be considering a long-term play instead and that a move might not have to happen this summer.
"From his statements, it seems that Enzo is offering himself in general, that he has a long career ahead of him and that the circumstances don't necessarily have to be right for him to join this summer,” Javi Lazaro said.
