The Red Devils are closing in on a long-awaited return to the Champions League, thanks to the excellent coaching of interim boss Carrick, who has managed to completely transform the mood at Old Trafford.

The former midfielder looks increasingly likely to be named the club's next permanent head coach. As a result, he is firmly involved in Man Utd's recruitment discussions and gives his input.

According to TEAMtalk, Carrick has "recommended" that Man Utd bring in Rogers, whom he knows personally from their time together at Middlesbrough in the Championship.

This, it is claimed, has only reinforced Man Utd's interest in the Aston Villa attacker. Recent reports have suggested that the race to sign Rogers is heating up, with the Red Devils right in the mix for his signature.

Man Utd step up Rogers pursuit

Carrick believes that the 24-year-old would be a good fit for his system, but there is an acceptance that signing him will not be straightforward. Rogers penned a long-term contract in late 2025, and Aston Villa do not want to sell.

However, the Villans need to be wary of UEFA's spending regulations. Consequently, they may have to make a big sale if they wish to invest in their side, and Rogers is undoubtedly their most valuable asset.

It would be a reluctant sale and one only made for a significant premium. If they are to cash in on Rogers, the Birmingham club want him to become their new record sale, meaning that Man Utd would have to pay more than the €117.5 million Man City shelled out on Jack Grealish.

His fee is further inflated by the fact that Boro are entitled to 20% of the profit Villa generate from the England star's departure. In short, Man Utd would have to make a massive investment.

The matter is additionally complicated by the fact that Rogers has a host of other suitors as well. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and PSG have all been linked with him in recent days and weeks.

The report states that Chelsea, in particular, are pushing hard to reunite Rogers with his good friend Cole Palmer. Director Joe Shields, who knows the 24-year-old from his time at Man City, is very keen to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

However, it is claimed that if Rogers were to move to West London, Man Utd would, in turn, step up their pursuit of Palmer, confirming FootballTransfers' exclusive reporting that the Chelsea superstar is a target for the Red Devils.

Palmer to Man Utd: The state of play

We revealed in January that Man Utd are mulling over a potential move for Palmer, who is viewed as the perfect long-term replacement for captain Bruno Fernandes.

It was suggested to us that both Palmer and Chelsea could be open to a move under the right conditions, though the Blues have publicly insisted that the 23-year-old is not for sale.

Insider Duncan Castles later confirmed on The Transfers Podcast that there was substance to claims that Palmer had grown somewhat unsettled at Chelsea and that he would be interested in returning to the Northwest.

At the time, Palmer was concerned that Estevao was rapidly emerging as Chelsea's key attacking piece. An ambitious player, the England attacker felt that the youngster was stepping on his toes and usurping his role.

As a result, his representatives offered him to various potential suitors, including Man Utd, to gauge their interest in a summer move. It is unclear whether Palmer still has concerns over Estevao at this point.

Evidently, though, it is set to be an intriguing summer transfer window for Rogers - and, potentially, Palmer.
