Man Utd receive official transfer demand from €87m superstar
Harry Maguire has urged the Manchester United hierarchy to sign significant reinforcements this summer in order to compete for major honours next season.
The England international was due to become a free agent in July, but he has signed a new one-year contract extension at Old Trafford to extend his spell at the club until at least 2027.
Maguire has re-established himself as an integral player for the Red Devils under interim boss Michael Carrick and his return to prominence has coincided with their impressive recent run of results in the Premier League.
Man Utd are currently third in the English top flight table with nine fixtures remaining, and Maguire believes they are capable of pushing on next season if the club’s hierarchy nail their recruitment during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Speaking to reporters while on a training camp in Dublin, Maguire admitted: “I always want to be part of a squad that I felt like could compete and the recruitment went well last year, we brought in some top players who helped us.
“I think this summer's going to be a big summer, I think we've got to recruit really well. Obviously there's a big manager decision as well, but I think the recruitment side of it is bringing players in.
“I think this summer has got to be a big year because we're not in Europe this year, we've played 40 games at the end of the season, and we definitely need a bigger squad next year.”
Maguire, who joined Man Utd for €87 million in 2019, added: “I think next season you look at it and I think we've got to be in the bracket where if we get the recruitment right and everything's positive from now to the end of the season and we keep going on the curve there's no ceiling to where we can reach.
“We've got to be in the conversation to go and win the big trophies. We're in a strong position. We've had a great few months under the manager. I feel like the squad is starting to look like something that is a strong squad. But this summer's going to be big, really, really big.
“We need more players, we need better quality, we need players to come into the starting eleven. And then when everything comes together, we'll see where it is at the start of the season.”
Analysis: Who could Man Utd sign this summer?
Man Utd are expected to prioritise signing at least one new central midfielder this summer, with Casemiro leaving on a Bosman deal and Manuel Ugarte widely tipped to depart the club too.
Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson is regarded as their primary target for the summer, but they are set to face competition from fierce rivals Manchester City, who are also eager to land the England star amid the uncertain future of Rodri.
Man Utd are also interested in the likes of Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes, Carlos Baleba and Sandro Tonali, while landing a new forward is on the agenda too amid interest in Anthony Gordon and Yan Diomande.
