Rashford’s Barcelona future on the line as defining week arrives
Marcus Rashford has been handed the chance to secure his Barcelona future in a period of games that has been branded “defining” for the on-loan Manchester United star.
Raphinha was struck down with injury during the international break, and Rashford is poised to benefit.
The former Leeds United winger will miss at least the next month of action with a hamstring problem, paving the way for the 28-year-old England star to get his chance.
Rashford’s future on the line
Although Rashford has impressed since moving on loan to Barcelona last summer, scoring 10 goals and laying on 11 assists in 39 games, he has not yet done enough to secure his future at Camp Nou.
The €30 million purchase clause in his Blaugrana deal remains untriggered, despite his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €38.5m.
A combination of Rashford’s sizeable wage demands (even with the winger willing to take a cut to move to Spain) and Barcelona’s ongoing financial strife has left his future in doubt, yet he is now the player the Catalans will look to step up during this vital period of the season.
“Rashford was signed for these specific moments. Now is the time for him to show his best form again,” journalist Lluis Carrasco explains.
“With Raphinha injured, everything falls on him. Not just football, but emotion, pressure, expectation.
“Three games vs Atletico will define him… It might feel exaggerated, or unfair, but that's Barca.”
Critical trilogy against Atletico Madrid
The next 10 days will, therefore, reveal a great deal about Rashford’s future.
Hansi Flick’s side host Atletico Madrid in a vital La Liga clash on Saturday before meeting Diego Simeone’s men in the Champions League quarter-finals twice in the space of six days. In between those matches, there is a derby with Espanyol.
Four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the league, there is little room for error. The pressure will be enormous, but this is magnified for Rashford, who is playing for his future.
Marcus Rashford to Barcelona: What’s the latest?
Rashford finds himself in the midst of persistent transfer speculation, particularly given the financial doubts Barcelona harbour over a permanent transfer.
He has an agreement with personal terms with the club but nothing formal has been signed.
“Sources at both clubs suggest that the €30 million option is still valid until the end of the current season. So if Barcelona want to pay that amount tomorrow, they can still sign Marcus Rashford,” Fabrizio Romano revealed.
“Now it is up to Barcelona to decide. Behind the scenes, they already have an agreement with Rashford on personal terms, with the player, his camp, and his brother handling things. But Barcelona want to restructure the deal with Manchester United. Why? Because financially, it is going to be a big summer for Barca.
“That is why Barcelona would prefer to restructure the Rashford deal rather than pay the full €30 million. Maybe another loan, maybe a different formula. The message from Manchester United is simple: they want the money. They do not want another loan. So that is the gap between the two clubs at the moment.”
Rashford still has work to do if he wants to remain a Barcelona player, and much of that can be done in the next week or so.
