Chelsea make 'promise' to their next summer signing
Chelsea have reportedly promised Valentin Barco that he will be a “cornerstone of the project” ahead of his imminent move from Strasbourg this summer.
The Argentina international has reached an agreement on personal terms to join Liam Rosenior’s side on a six-year contract this summer, as per multiple reports, and he is expected to become Chelsea’s next wonderkid signing.
The 21-year-old joined Strasbourg from Brighton & Hove Albion as a left-back, but he was converted into a central midfielder by Rosenior and he is expected to be deployed in the middle of the park upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Chelsea already have a plethora of midfield options at their disposal, however news that Barco is set to join the club comes amid the uncertain future of his compatriot Enzo Fernandez, who will miss the Blues’ clash against Manchester City on Sunday due to his recent comments about Madrid.
Barco, a Boca Juniors youth product, has two goals and nine assists in 38 games so far this season, and he scored his first goal for Argentina during a 5-0 win over Zambia last week.
Confirmed: Valentin Barco set for key role at Chelsea
Barco will face competition from the likes of Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, Romeo Lavia, Reece James and potentially Fernandez when he completes his anticipated move to Chelsea this summer, but the Blues hierarchy have promised him a key role at Stamford Bridge.
That is according to AS reporter Andres Onrubia Ramos, who posted on X: “Valentín Barco will play for Chelsea. Total agreement with the Strasbourg midfielder for six seasons.
“The presence of Rosenior, who boosted him in France, has been key for him to accept the offer from the Londoners. The club has convinced him by guaranteeing that he will be a cornerstone of the project.
“Barco has many options to go to the World Cup, after establishing himself this season as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1.”
When Barco's move to Chelsea is officially confirmed, he will become the fifth player to join the Blues this summer, after Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner and Dastan Satpaev.
