Manchester United have some ‘concerns’ over signing Sandro Tonali and the prospect of the Newcastle star moving to Old Trafford this summer has reportedly been ‘played down’.

Tonali is expected to be in strong demand this summer after his agent spoke of the player’s ‘goal’ to move to an elite club, particularly with Newcastle on course to miss out on European football for next season.

The likes of United, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been linked with a move, but, with Tonali still having more than three years remaining on his contract, Newcastle are expected to demand significantly more than the €60 million they spent on the 25-year-old in 2023.

And, according to The Athletic, the price of a deal may hinder Tonali’s chances of moving to United and other midfield options are being considered, with Elliot Anderson still the club’s top target.

However, it has been revealed that Tonali was identified as a ‘priority target’ for United last summer and a deal was ‘briefly explored’ but the costs prevented a move from progressing.

There are also said to be ‘concerns’ from some at United over the gambling issues which saw Tonali banned for ten months in 2023, leading to doubts that the Newcastle star will join the Red Devils this summer.

Anderson saga could have implications on Tonali future at Newcastle

Despite the doubts over Tonali’s future, it is understood that there is no ‘gentleman’s agreement’ for him to leave St James’ Park this summer even if Newcastle miss out on Europe, contrary to previous reports.

Tonali is believed to be happy on Tyneside and has not pushed for an exit but Newcastle are desperate to avoid a repeat of the Alexander Isak situation which plagued them last summer and want to ensure a quick resolution to their star man’s future.

United’s interest in Tonali will be conditional on what happens with Anderson, with City believed to be in pole position to sign the Nottingham Forest star.

Tonali could end up being a consolation prize for either side that misses out on Anderson, with Arsenal unlikely to move for the Newcastle man at this current price.

Newcastle believe Tonali to be in the same category as the Premier League’s elite midfielders and, as such, value him accordingly, meaning they will be watching the Anderson saga closely in order to gauge the market prices.
