FootballTransfers understands that Manchester United have identified Inter full-back Federico Dimarco as a priority target for the summer.

Sources have informed us that the Red Devils view the Italy international as one of the best left-sided players in European football. Accordingly, Man Utd will look to test the waters over a possible summer transfer.

An approach is likely, though whether it will be successful is up in the air, as Inter have a firm not-for-sale stance. The Serie A leaders want to hand Dimarco a contract extension until 2030 and a substantial pay increase.

The 28-year-old's current deal runs until June 2027, so agreeing fresh terms is becoming an increasingly pressing matter for Inter. Should negotiations prove unsuccessful, the chances of a summer move would certainly increase.

As a result, Man Utd and other suitors are closely monitoring his situation. Given his age, the Red Devils would look to start negotiations at around €45 million, but they could be prepared to go as high as high €60m to get their man. His current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €47.4m.

Why Man Utd want Dimarco

Prising Dimarco away from the Nerazzurri certainly will not be easy. Born in Milan and a lifelong Interista, the 28-year-old has been with the Italian giants since childhood.

In 2017, he was sold to Swiss club Sion, but Inter brought him back after just a year. Following loans at Parma and Hellas Verona, Dimarco has gone from strength to strength, becoming a first-team regular in 2021/22.

Over the years, he has increasingly evolved into an offensive threat from his left wing-back position. This season, he has recorded a stunning seven goals and 15 assists in 36 games across all competitions.

At this point, Dimarco is one of the most devastating wide players in European football. This is backed up by data from analytics firm SciSports, which shows that Dimarco has been the standout wide defender in Serie A this term.

Though Man Utd no longer play with wing-backs, Dimarco would be an undeniable upgrade on their current left-back options purely in terms of ability. None of the Red Devils' full-backs is anywhere near Dimarco, according to SciSports.

Former head coach Ruben Amorim previously highlighted Man Utd's need to sign a top-class attack-minded, left-sided defender. In November, following the infamous 1-0 loss to 10-man Everton, he insisted that the Red Devils must sign a game-changer akin to Amad Diallo but for the left flank.

Dimarco would certainly be such a player.
