Since then, Liverpool have been the closest challengers to Manchester City - although Klopp announced his departure at the end of the 2023-24 season - and they have been forced to spend big in order to achieve that.

Their biggest spending season came in 2018-19, however. The Reds splashed a whopping €182.5m on new signings that year, adding the likes of Alisson, Naby Keita and Fabinho.
