Kylian Mbappe told exactly what he needs to do to win the 2027 Ballon d’Or
Kylian Mbappe has been told he must lead Real Madrid to Champions League glory this season in order to win the 2027 Ballon d’Or.
Mbappe is licking his wounds after finishing second behind Bayern Munich and England star Harry Kane in the race for the 2026 Golden Ball.
The 27-year-old felt he had a strong case to achieve his dream of winning the Ballon d’Or after scoring 42 goals in 44 games for Real last season.
France striker Mbappe also became the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup by netting 10 goals in North America in the summer.
However, Mbappe missed out on claiming the 2026 Ballon d’Or after failing to win a major trophy for Real and France, despite his goalscoring heroics.
And RMC Sport’s footballer-turned-journalist Kevin Diaz insists Mbappe must avoid a repeat if he is to win the 2027 Ballon d’Or ahead of Lamine Yamal.
Yamal finished third in this year’s rankings after leading Barcelona to the 2025-26 La Liga title, while he also played a role in Spain winning the 2026 World Cup.
"If he (Mbappe) wants to secure a Ballon d'Or, he’ll need to win one of the two major titles (La Liga and Champions League) - that would guarantee him the award," Diaz argues.
“Otherwise, he can never be certain of winning it.
“If, for instance, Barcelona were to win the Champions League, Lamine Yamal would take the Ballon d'Or, even if Mbappe scores 72 goals.
"If Mbappe wants to be sure of winning it, he needs to keep performing well - even if that means scoring a few less goals - while also putting more energy into the team.
“If he wins the Champions League, he’ll go on to win the Ballon d'Or; that’s for sure.”
Mbappe has already made a strong start to the season, scoring 14 goals in 13 games for Real including a brace in last Sunday’s Clasico at Barcelona.
Kane became first Englishman to win Ballon d'Or for 25 years
However, Ballon d’Or winner Kane has also flew out of the blocks in 2026-27, bagging 10 goals in 12 appearances for Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern.
Kane scored a magnificent 73 goals for club and country last season as Bayern won the league and cup double and England finished third at the World Cup.
More than just a goalscorer, he is also renowned for his vision and work rate - qualities which helped him become the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or for 25 years.
