Carrick given time to arrest United slide

Head coach Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Man Utd ahead of their trip to Chelsea on Saturday, according to BBC Sport.

Carrick is under huge pressure after presiding over a dreadful run of form which has yielded just two wins from 12 games this season.

However, the 45-year-old has been given the opportunity to turn things around by senior United officials following talks over his future.

Carrick was named permanent manager in May after an impressive spell as interim boss last season, guiding the club to a third-placed Premier League finish.

However, following a quiet summer transfer window, United have endured a torrid start to the season, with performances lacking in energy and togetherness.

Bruno Fernandes criticised Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 loss at Como in the Champions League last week, increasing the pressure on his manager.

The United captain was subsequently dropped for the 3-0 league defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether Fernandes will return to the fold as United travel to a Chelsea side who were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Villa would demand huge fee for Emery

Aston Villa would want €23.8million (£20m) in compensation if United tried to appoint Unai Emery as their next manager, according to The Guardian.

Various publications understand United are continuing to evaluate candidates to replace Carrick, despite giving him time to arrest the club's slump.

The Guardian claims United officials are huge admirers of Emery, who has cemented his status as one of the best managers in the world at Villa.

In a near four-year spell in charge of Villa, the Spaniard has led them to the 2026 Europa League as well as two top-four finishes in the Premier League.

However, United would need to make Emery the second most expensive manager in football history in order to prize him away from Villa Park.

Julian Nagelsmann became the most expensive coach in history when Bayern Munich recruited him from RB Leipzig for €25m (£21.7m) in July 2021.

BBC Sport understands Nagelsmann, who is out of work after leaving the Germany national team in the summer, is also a contender for the United job.

Former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe and ex-Chelsea manager Antonio Conte are also believed to be keen on the United post.

Rooney slams three Red Devils signings

Wayne Rooney says United are “deluded” if they think Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are good enough to take his former club forward.

United signed all three players last summer, shelling out €226m (£189.1m) to acquire their services from RB Leipzig, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford respectively.

And Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo scored 34 goals between them as the 20-time league champions bounced back from a difficult start to finish third in the league last season.

However, while the trio have bagged eight goals between them this season, Rooney is adamant they are not at the level required for United.

United’s all-time leading goalscorer told Stick to United: “They’re deluded if they think the front three that they’ve brought in are good enough; they’re not.

“They want some players who’ve played in the Premier League. They’re bringing players in from Wolves, from Brentford, who have done well for them clubs.

“But to take this current group of Manchester United players, for them to sign and to take this team into the next level, into the Champions League, you know, you’re living in Cuckooland if you think they’re going to achieve that.

“So the squad is absolutely a million miles away from being champions.”

West Ham receive offer to sign Sancho

West Ham United have been offered the chance to sign Jadon Sancho by the former Man Utd winger’s representatives, according to talkSPORT.

Sancho is one of the most expensive signings in Man Utd’s history, joining the club from Borussia Dortmund for €85m (£71.1m) in July 2021.

However, following a disastrous five-year spell, the England international left Old Trafford on a free transfer at the end of last season.

Sancho, who recorded 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for United, spent the final two-and-a-half years of his contract on loan at Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa.

Having underwhelmed at Chelsea and Villa, Sancho - still just 26 years of age - remains on the hunt for a club who can help him reboot his career.

And talkSPORT understands his agents have now approached Championship side West Ham over the possibility of signing the London-born attacker.

Sancho has reportedly received an offer from La Liga side Getafe but talkSPORT claims the contract is worth less than €119,500 (£100,000) a week.
