Celtic are reportedly weighing up a permanent deal for Boca Juniors defender Marcelo Saracchi, whose loan spell with the Scottish giants is due to end this summer.

The 27-year-old has made 19 appearances across all competitions since his arrival at Celtic Park on a season-long loan deal in August and it’s understood that his parent club are keen to finalise a sale this summer.

Saracchi missed two months of the campaign due to a hamstring injury and he has been forced to play a back-up role to Kieran Tierney at left-back since his return to full fitness, and a permanent move to Celtic will almost certainly depend on whether he is willing to accept this position in the squad.

That is according to a report from Football Insider, who claim that Celtic are open to signing Saracchi permanently if he expresses a desire to finalise an agreement.

Saracchi’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at just €1.2 million and with Boca Juniors open to agreeing a deal, a permanent move to Celtic will be on the cards if the Uruguay defender is willing to be a back-up option next season.

Martin O’Neill approves Marcelo Saracchi transfer

Saracchi has only started two matches since Martin O’Neill returned as interim boss following Wilfried Nancy’s dismal start in the Celtic Park dugout, but the 74-year-old recently revealed his desire for the club to sign the Uruguay international this summer.

When asked if Celtic should sign Saracchi on a permanent deal after his goal against Livingston in February, O’Neill told the Glasgow Times: “I think they will. I think they should do.

“If you're asking me, I think Tierney's playing brilliantly for us at this moment. Brilliantly. Back to the Kieran Tierney that Arsenal ended up buying. So he's doing really well. He’s back to his very best.

“But Saracchi scored the goal for us. He's a strange wee character. He hasn't a clue what I'm saying to him. Not a clue! I mean, I could be saying anything to him, and he would still say yes to it. I think the club should be looking at something like that.”
