Chelsea Transfer News Today: Alvarez verdict received as agreement reached
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Chelsea transfer news, rumours and gossip, including updates on Julian Alvarez and Jesse Derry.
Julian Alvarez verdict
Chelsea have been told that Julian Alvarez is not the player they need to sign to challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title.
The Atletico Madrid striker is on the Blues’ transfer radar ahead of this summer, but Andy Townsend has warned them against pursuing a deal.
“I like Julian Alvarez and I know he’s scored goals at Atletico Madrid but I’ve never quite seen him as someone who would make the difference for anybody else at the top of the Premier League to really kick on and go and grab the league out of Arsenal’s hands,” he told Metro.
“I don’t know if he’s got enough to come in and play as the starting striker in the Premier League and be the difference for some of those teams trying to close the door on Arsenal. I don’t quite see that.”
Jesse Derry fee agreed
Chelsea have agreed to pay Crystal Palace a compensation fee in excess of €1.15 million (£1m) for Jesse Derry following his move to Stamford Bridge last summer.
The England U19 international was courted by several top clubs across Europe after rejecting the chance to sign professional terms at Selhurst Park and he eventually opted to join Chelsea in July.
Due to the fact Derry was a homegrown player under the age of 24, Crystal Palace were owed compensation following his summer move to Chelsea and The Athletic have confirmed that a fee in excess of €1.15m (£1m) was agreed between the clubs.
This avoided the need for a tribunal, which was recently required to settle the fee Chelsea were owed from Liverpool for Rio Ngumoha.
Man Utd want Nicolas Jackson
Manchester United are reportedly among the clubs keeping close tabs on Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, who is currently on loan at Bayern Munich.
Vincent Kompany’s side have decided against signing him on a permanent deal and with Jackson set to be on the market ahead of the 2026-27 season, several teams are keeping close tabs on his current situation.
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Aston Villa, Man Utd, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in signing the 24-year-old when the upcoming summer transfer window opens.
Jackson’s representatives are reportedly already in talks with intermediaries regarding a potential summer deal, while the Chelsea hierarchy are aware that a permanent sale could be the best option for all parties.
Liam Delap message
Liam Delap has struggled since his arrival from Ipswich Town last summer and rumours have suggested he could be sold following the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
However, Liam Rosenior has insisted that he is happy with the Englishman. When asked if you can be a good striker without scoring many goals, in relation to Delap, the Chelsea boss said: “100%. That's the first thing I look for in my strikers. I look for people who contribute to the team winning games of football.
“Liam certainly did that against Hull. He's done that in other games as well. All strikers want to score goals, of course. That's why they play the game. That's what they love to do. But there's a lot more.
“You need 11 attackers. You need 11 defenders at all times. Liam defends from the front amazingly well. So does Joao [Pedro]. They contribute to what has been a good record for us recently. And it has to continue.”
He added: “If you look at most players' careers, normally when they join the club, it's the second season that they really take off. For Liam, he's had some really, really good performances.
“But also his rhythm has been interrupted with injury, his shoulder issue. So I'm really, really happy with Joao. I'm really, really happy with Liam. I thought Marc Guiu, when we've called upon him, has been very good. And hopefully that needs to continue for us to be successful.”
