Chris Sutton has torn into Celtic for their failure to bring in a new striker early in the January window, and the news of interest in Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda will surely do little to mollify him.

The January transfer window has so far been a major disappointment for Celtic. The sacking of Wilfried Nancy and Paul Tisdale has left the club's January plans in disarray, and Martin O'Neill is trying to pick up the scraps.

The only movement so far has been defensive in nature. Full-back Julian Araujo was Nancy's only signing, arriving on loan from Bournemouth, while O'Neill's first piece of business was to recall Stephen Welsh from his Motherwell loan.

Now, Sky Germany reports that Celtic could make another defensive move. The Parkhead club are set to make a loan offer for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda, who is struggling for game time despite the Bundesliga side leaking goals.

The Switzerland international, who currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €9.5 million, was an unused substitute on Friday as Frankfurt salvaged a late 3-3 draw against an average Werder Bremen side. It was the latest in a string of poor performances and could cost coach Dino Toppmoller his job.

Sutton tears into Celtic over lack of striker signing

Due to this uncertainty, the Eagles are reluctant to sanction Amenda's exit. Director Markus Krosche is said to have already rebuffed several offers from other clubs. However, the defender is keen to leave. The 22-year-old needs to play if he is to make Switzerland's World Cup squad.

It remains to be seen if Celtic can convince Frankfurt to release Amenda, but Chris Sutton has been left baffled by Celtic's January window so far. Writing in his Daily Record column, the pundit tore into the Hoops hierarchy for "sleeping on the job."

Sutton believes the lack of a striker signing is particularly egregious. "I still can’t quite believe we are two weeks into the window and a striker hasn’t already been in the building for a fortnight," he wrote. "Everyone knew it was beyond a priority. It was an absolute must."

Sutton added: "O’Neill has his work cut out putting things right on the pitch, but to hear he’s also having to scramble around for players in the January window, working around the clock, constantly watching videos and talking to agents, it almost defies belief."

The ex-player concludes that Celtic are quite simply "taking the p***." The fact that 73-year-old O'Neill has to sort out the place makes them look "amateurish" and gives off the impression that they are taking the club legend for granted.

After all, O'Neill "is doing them a favour when he could be sitting with his feet up, drinking Horlicks and watching Westerns in the afternoons."
