Fabrizio Romano Transfer News: Guehi signing, Glasner to Man Utd, Vini Jr contract
Fabrizio Romano has given a series of important updates from around the transfer market, with a deal for Marc Guehi close, the latest on Oliver Glasner’s future and an update on Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior.
Manchester City complete Mark Guehi signing
Romano says the Crystal Palace defender is already set to join City after a January deal worth up to £30m.
“Mark Guehi to Manchester City is done. Everything is agreed and confirmed, and that is why he was not in the Crystal Palace squad this weekend,” Romano said.
“It is a here we go. Manchester City will pay £20m fixed plus add-ons and a sell-on clause, taking the total package up to around £30m. The verbal agreement was already in place this morning, with only small details to finalise.
“This is a significant deal not only for January but also for the summer, because Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Spanish clubs were all monitoring Guehi, while Arsenal made some calls without pushing hard.
“City have now invested around £85m in this window between Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, and they have also recalled Max Alleyne, who is performing very well.”
Oliver Glasner leaving Crystal Palace
Romano explains that the Palace manager’s departure has been decided for months.
“Oliver Glasner has now officially confirmed what I reported on Christmas Day and again before today’s press conference,” Romano said.
“He told the club months ago that he would not extend his contract and would leave Crystal Palace at the end of the season.
“This was never about creating problems; it was about telling the truth as I understood it. Today, Glasner himself confirmed that the decision had already been made.”
Could Glasner join Manchester United?
Interest around the German coach is growing, but Romano says it is too early for a clear shortlist.
“On Manchester United, I keep saying that it will take time before they finalise a managerial shortlist,” Romano said.
“Roberto De Zerbi is appreciated and has been since 2024, but he is currently focused on Marseille. Thomas Tuchel is with England, although Ineos are big admirers of him.
“Regarding Glasner, there is a good connection with some people at Manchester United, particularly Christopher Vivell, who knows German football very well. However, it is still too early to say he is definitely on their shortlist.
“Many clubs are following his situation, so there will be conversations about his future, but nothing is concrete with United at this stage.”
Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Girona
Germany international goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is close to completing a loan move from Barcelona to Girona.
“Marc-Andre ter Stegen has said yes to Girona and is ready to join them on loan until the end of the season,” Romano said.
“There are still small details to resolve between Barcelona and Girona, but the deal is expected to happen next week.”
Dro to leave Barcelona for €6m
Romano reveals that the teenage midfielder has told Hansi Flick he is departing this month.
“Dro, who has just turned 18, went into the dressing room today and told Hansi Flick: ‘Coach, I am leaving’,” Romano said.
“He will not sign a new contract with Barcelona and will trigger his €6m release clause this month. That fee will be paid immediately.
“Many English clubs have been linked, but from what I am told, this is unlikely to be a Spanish club and I am not certain it will be an English club either. There could be a surprise destination.
“The decision was made by Dro together with his agent Ivan de la Pena, and Barcelona have been informed. I will reveal his next club as soon as I have it confirmed.”
Vinicius Junior contract at Real Madrid
At Real Madrid, there is uncertainty over the future of Vinicius Junior, whose contract expires in 18 months.
“Real Madrid and Florentino Perez want Vinicius Junior to sign a new contract, and the proposal has already been on the table for some time,” Romano said.
“Vinicius was not always happy with the situation under Xabi Alonso, and there were tense moments, even publicly. They later found common ground in November and December, but their relationship was never perfect.
“Now that Alonso has left, Real Madrid hope this makes it easier for Vinicius to commit, but the technical project still matters. Who will be the manager next season? Will Arbeloa stay or will there be a change?
“Financial terms are not the main issue, the sporting project is equally important. So this remains a story to follow, especially in a World Cup year.”
